Methodology
How Nanorater evaluates a good photo (lighting, framing, expression, background)
Dec 27, 2025
Overview
Nanorater is a photo feedback tool. It analyzes the photo you upload and returns a score plus actionable suggestions.
The goal is not to declare an objective “beauty truth.” The goal is to help you take a better photo for your context (dating profile, professional headshot, social post, etc.).
What we evaluate
Lighting
- Direction and softness (window light vs harsh overhead light)
- Exposure and contrast (over/under-exposed faces lose detail)
- Color cast (e.g., green fluorescent / warm tungsten)
Framing and camera angle
- Camera distance and lens distortion (too close can widen features)
- Headroom and crop (avoid awkward cutoffs)
- Perspective (slight above-eye angle vs low angle)
Expression and pose
- Tension in jaw/eyes (micro-expressions read strongly)
- Head tilt and shoulder line
- Pose consistency with the intended vibe (friendly vs authoritative)
Background and context
- Visual clutter and distractions
- Background brightness compared to the face
- Context cues (professional vs casual)
Grooming and styling cues
- Hair/skin shine, flyaways, wrinkles
- Outfit fit and neckline choices
- Accessory noise and reflections
What the score means
A higher score generally means the photo reads more intentional and matches the chosen context better.
A lower score usually points to fixable issues like lighting, framing, expression, or distractions.
Practical guidance
The highest-leverage improvements for most photos:
- Move closer to a window (soft, even light)
- Increase camera distance and crop in (reduce distortion)
- Simplify background
- Relax jaw and eyes
- Re-shoot 3–5 variations and compare
Important note
This methodology describes typical factors that influence how a photo is perceived. It is not medical, psychological, or legal advice.
